Marketing Strategy: Fixed Gas Detection Systems

Fixed gas detectors contribute to about 80% to our total revenues. Our biggest markets are enclosed parking facilities for monitoring CO and NO2 gases, and in some cases, combustibles (natural gas or propane powered vehicles).

A typical average sized parking garage may require from a few dozen to several hundred units of toxic (and combustible) gas detectors, depending on how big the parking area is and the number of parking levels. Each gas detector can monitor up to 700 square meters of parking area. The strategy in promoting fixed gas detectors is to call on HVAC/R engineers and consultants. These are the people who make the engineering designs and estimates for building projects including parking garages. We would normally conduct product presentations to their engineers to educate them on our products and the solutions we can provide for their projects. We can support you by conducting a webinar for them if you can make the arrangements by gathering all engineers involved at a per-arranged time and date. The webinar will only take about an hour. Our goal in these presentations is to get our product specifications into their project specifications. This strategy has been proven to be very effective as evidenced by the many building projects showing our specs under “gas detection” and mechanical subcontractors calling on us for a quotation because our specs are shown in their bid documents as

In most cases, the building owners will purchase whatever the consultants recommend. If the consultant recommends CET gas detectors and controllers, the building owners will not deviate from it. Even if it goes thru a bidding process, the bid specs will be based on our system specifications narrowing our competitors’ chances of winning the bid. This is how we approach this market. Gas Detection System for Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) for Parking Garages

Provide a wall mount, field programmable control panel with back-lit, LCD digital display, LED alarm indication, and door mounted 90 dB audible alarm with silence / acknowledge switch. There shall be an LCD display of gas type, concentration measured, and alarm status. System controller shall be capable of supporting up to 128 digital transmitters on an RS485 Modbus network. The controller shall have 4 on board relays and shall support analog output modules (four only 4 – 20 mA outputs per module) and relay output modules (four or eight 5 A SPDT relays per module) if required. The system RS485 Modbus network wiring shall be 4-wire (2 low voltage power wires and a shielded twisted pair for the communication bus). The controller shall be CSA / UL / CE / FCC / IP tested and certified, and powered by 90 to 240 VAC, 47 to 63 Hz. The controller should be installed in a dry area if it does not have the optional key lock. If it is to be installed in an area that requires a water/dust tight enclosure the key lock version must be requested.

If communication to a DDC/BMS is required, the FCS comes standard with Modbus output Model FCS-M and optional BACnet output Model FCS-B communication protocols.

Provide remote mount digital sensor transmitters with dual sensor capability for Carbon Monoxide (CO) from gas engine exhaust, with an electrochemical sensor for CO with a detection range of 0 – 200 ppm and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) from diesel engine exhaust, with an electrochemical sensor for NO2 with a detection range of 0 – 10 ppm. The sensor transmitter shall be housed in a rugged, water/dust tight, wall mount, polycarbonate junction box with a secured, hinged door. The remote mount sensor transmitter shall operate on power supplied by the control panel, and shall provide a Modbus digital output signal to the control panel. Model CGAS-D-CO-NO2

The electrochemical CO and NO2 gas sensors shall be capable of meeting government Occupational Health and Safety measurement standards for workplace exposure to toxic gases and vapours. Supply one sensor / transmitter for every 5000 to 7000 sq. ft. of area to be monitored. Install the sensor transmitters at 4’ to 6’ from the floor (breathing zone).

Optionally, provide remote mount audible, visual (strobe/siren) alarm to be mounted at higher elevations, activated upon any high alarm condition to alert of gas build up beyond high alarm concentration. Model RSH-24V

System operation shall be as follows: System relays are normally energized in non-gas-alarm state so they act in fail-safe operation. Upon detection of 25 ppm CO in air or 0.7 ppm NO2, the system shall illuminate the Low alarm LED, the Low alarm relays (ventilation) will be activated immediately. The system shall keep the ventilation running for a minimum of 10 minutes to avoid short-cycling.

Upon detection of 100 ppm CO in air or 1.5 ppm NO2, the system shall illuminate the High alarm LED, the High alarm relays and audible alarm will be activated. The system shall keep the High relays active for a minimum of 10 minutes.

Audible alarm can be silenced from the front panel push button.

The contractor shall provide all wiring, conduit and interconnection required for a successful installation.

Refrigerant Leak Detection System for Mechanical Rooms

Provide a wall mount, programmable 4-ch controller with back-lit LCD digital display, LED alarm indication, top mounted strobe light, 80 dB audible alarm with silence / acknowledge button integrated into the Lexan label and manual emergency mushroom shut off switch all housed in a rugged, water/dust tight IP54 rated polycarbonate/ABS enclosure with secured, hinged door. The controller shall have real time display of gas concentration, and alarm status. Controller shall be capable of supporting up to four remote sensor/transmitters. Controller shall provide three dry contact relays rated 5 A @ 240VAC SPDT each for control of other devices. If information is required at a DDC/BMS the FCS-4 comes standard with Modbus output (FCS-4-M) or BACnet output (FCS-4-B) communications protocol. Two optional analog output signals are also available if desired. Controller wiring to remote sensor/transmitter shall be 3-conductor, 16-18 gauge, and stranded, shielded in conduit. System power requirement is 90 to 240 VAC, 47 to 63 Hz or low voltage 16-30VDC or 12-28 VAC. The controller shall be tested to CSA/UL/CE, FCC and IP54 standards. Controller shall be installed outside entrance door to mechanical room at 4’ to 6’ from the floor in an area visible to anyone entering in the room.

Provide one remote mount transmitter model ART-B-R134A with gas specific infrared sensor for R134A refrigerant with measurement range of 0-3500 ppm. The sensor shall be housed in a rugged, wall mount, ABS/polycarbonate junction box. The remote mount sensor/transmitter shall operate on power supplied by the FCS-4 control panel and shall provide digital output signal (Modbus) to the control panel. Install the R410A sensor 12” to 24” from the floor (refrigerants are heavier than air) in an area where refrigerant leaks are most likely to occur.

System operation shall be as follows: Upon detection of 250 ppm R134A the system shall illuminate the Low alarm LED and top mounted strobe light on the FCS-4, activate any remote alarms if the system indicates a leak above the low alarm threshold and the Low alarm relay controlling the exhaust fan starter. The system shall shut off the exhaust fan(s) in the mechanical room until the level of R134A drops below the alarm threshold.

Upon detection of 1000 ppm R134A the system shall illuminate the High alarm LED and top mounted strobe light on the FCS-4, activate ANY remote alarms if the system indicates a leak above the high alarm threshold and the High alarm relay. The system shall shut off the exhaust fan(s) in the mechanical room until the level of R134A drops below the alarm threshold.

The contractor shall provide all wiring, conduit and interconnection required for a successful installation. Wiring must be 16-18 gauge, stranded, shielded and preferably in conduit. System shall be tested and commissioned after installation by a trained, authorized service representative of the manufacturer, with a detailed service report provided after the site visit.
