Airbourne Ultrasound, ASTM F3004, Standard Test Method for Evaluation of Seal Quality and Integrity Using Airborne Ultrasound, referred to as ABUS, is a sound-based technology capable of testing non-porous and porous seals for breaches in sterility and seal quality. ABUS technology uses sound waves to propagate through the seal of a package. A properly formed seal shows consistency and an approximate 30-60% signal transmission. A cold seal, defect or low seal quality will cause a significant drop in signal to nearly 0%. When an air gap is present between two substrates, the signal is lost. If a cut or pinhole is present, signal transmission is near 100%
ABUS is the only non-destructive, quantitative test method considered as an FDA consensus standard suited for seal quality analysis. Much like Vacuum Decay, ABUS reject criteria can be created with a statistical approach reducing subjectivity and false negatives, unlike dye ingress and manual visual inspection. Sensitivities of 100 micron can be detected, either offline or inline integrated in the packaging process. This method is beneficial and capable of inspecting a large variety of packaging formats, substrates, and seals, having only the following limitation: Applications with a fin seal \ or gussets cannot be tested as the air gap between the sealed materials will lower the signal and appear as a defect
